How Homespun by Ruth Began

Hi! Meet Ruth.

A young mom, wife, entrepreneur, and Jesus lover tucked back into a quiet corner of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

As a child, my mom gave me free reign of her sewing machines. Through many broken needles, jammed threads, and many hours with a seam ripper, she quietly passed on her love of sewing to me. I made my first dress all by myself by the time I was 12.

I quickly realized that I did not enjoy fooling with the "extras" on garments. They simply took too much time. I preferred minimal and basic styles in the first place. However, I did find it incredibly fulfilling to find uses for the small fabric scraps that were often thrown away. There was a sense of accomplishment to watch a quilt come together under my needle- all from something that otherwise would have been wasted.

Fast forward until now, I've been discovering the detriments fast fashion has brought to our world. Not only has it been hard on the earth, but it's been a slave master to so many people.

The more I started researching and the more I learned, the more I wanted to help break this dreaded cycle.

This inspired me to find ways to upcycle and repurpose as much as I could. I discovered that using quality products over and over was so much better then buying cheap items that wore out after a few months of use. Learning to reduce waste as well as being content with the items I have, was starting to open up a new way of living.

Finding natural fiber fabrics was a part of this journey that I did not see coming. I quickly saw the benefits and the lack of availability within the natural fiber world.

Realizing I could use the talent God (and my mom!) had blessed me with, to help support my family and benefit the world around me, Homespun by Ruth was born.

January 1, 2021 was our first official opening day. I was simply blown away with the interest and support that showed up on my Facebook page! That support has continued to this day, and I'm forever grateful!

As our business grew, it soon became necessary to hire help. I learned more about the benefits of wearing natural fibers and was amazed at how little we tend to think about what we put on our bodies. I learned how microplastics can enter our bodies by wearing non-natural fibers. This sealed in me a desire to create more natural fiber options for all of us that want to reduce the toxic load on our bodies.

Beyond that, I also started dreaming of ways to help empower women- not only in my own community and country, but also around the world.

This of course started with hiring women that needed some extra income for their families. It was incredibly rewarding to know I was giving other women the same opportunity I had- to work from home and be able to spend time with their families and kiddos while bringing in some income.

But I wanted to do more... In the beginning of 2022, I started setting aside a portion of our profits in hopes of doing something bigger. In April, we held the first Strands of Hope Benefit Auction as a way to help women here in the US as well as around the world. (You can find more info on our main page about that!) We have yet to see how that will grow and where all this will take us.

Enter Andrea.

A wife, mama, homemaker, and Jesus follower.

I have been sewing for close to 20 years now. My mom gets the credit for teaching me. She is very talented at pretty much any craft. I'm sure she had to have had so much patience in the early days of teaching me but I'm grateful that she has passed that skill and love down to me. I hope to do the same for my daughter some day as well.

Around October of 2022 I was looking for a way to earn a little extra income. On a whim I messaged my sister, Ruth (she's the lovely lady introduced first), to see if she would have anything I could help out with Homespun by Ruth. Indeed, there was. She mailed me a few things and I got busy. (She lived in Virginia - I am in Oregon.)

Things moved rapidly from there. Ruth and her husband felt God was calling them to something different. They were not sure yet exactly what but possible mission work in another place. They put their house up for sale and got ready to move.

This lead Ruth to try to figure out what to do with Homespun by Ruth. She could not take the business with them. She decided to ask me to see if I was interested in buying the business. After praying and thinking about it for a while my husband and I decided that we would take over Homespun by Ruth. And that's pretty much where we are at!

We became official owners of Homespun by Ruth in January of 2023. This is a huge new step for us! So much to learn and figure out! But God has been so faithful and has blessed us so much! Ruth continues to walk along side us helping us with any questions we have.

Thank you for coming along for the journey! You guys have blessed me so much!  I can't wait to see what all God has in store for us!

Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have! We will get back with you as soon as possible.
